The best waterfalls in Kelowna are natural wonders, many of which beckon visitors year-round, even if you won’t see them roaring in their full glory until springtime.
Whether you find beauty in the babbling brook or the raging river, these waterfalls will wow you.
For that dose of fresh air and natural beauty we all need every now and again, here are the top 8 waterfalls to explore during your next vacation to Kelowna.
Christie Falls is one of nature’s most spectacular creations. This magnificent waterfall, located near Kelowna, is a must-see for anyone visiting the area.
While the falls are accessible by a 7km road, a high clearance vehicle is recommended to reach the trailhead.
Sheer cliffs plunge into a deep pool of water, and the spray from the falls creates a rainbow in the sunlight. Ropes are provided for the downclimb to the base of the falls, but be warned – it’s very steep and slippery.
And once you reach the bottom, you’re not done yet! Behind the falls is a cave, and if you’re brave enough to enter, you’ll be rewarded with a rope swing that swings you right into the middle of the falls.
This trail is not for the faint of heart but if you’re up for a bit of a challenge, add Christie Falls to your Kelowna hiking bucket list – you won’t be disappointed!
If you’re looking for a short and moderate hike that will really get your heart pumping, Crawford Falls is the place to go.
The trailhead for this hike is located in Canyon Falls Court, nestled within a quiet neighborhood of Kelowna. You’ll discover, not one, but two fantastic waterfalls that are definitely worth a visit.
The Lower Falls is the more popular of the two; a 20-foot waterfall that’s surrounded by rocky canyon walls. The hike will only take about 30 minutes, but it’s pretty steep and descends rapidly.
If you backtrack a bit and take the fork in the path, you’ll get to the 40-foot Upper Falls. The view of the falls from above is pretty impressive, hidden away from the main path and offers a more peaceful setting. It’s well worth the extra effort to get there.
All in all, the hike to both waterfalls is a moderate one that will take around 60 minutes out and back. Just be sure to wear appropriate footwear, as the path can be quite slippery depending on when you visit.
Note: This trail is regularly subject to closures due to conditions; make sure you check before you go!
Just blocks from the hustle and bustle of downtown West Kelowna is a hidden gem of a waterfall. Tucked away in Glen Canyon Regional Park (South), this 24-foot fall is a tranquil oasis amidst the busyness of city life.
Viewed from the Powers Creek Falls Bridge, the waterfall can be accessed from Glen Canyon Drive or Hebert Road.
Although it may be a hidden gem, the waterfall is definitely worth seeking out for those who appreciate the beauty of nature. And who knows? Maybe you’ll even find your own secret spot to relax and recharge.
Note, furry friends are allowed here; just make sure to have them on a leash!
Mill Creek is a local gem located near the Kelowna airport; the perfect spot to get away from it all and enjoy nature at its finest.
Just a 10-minute walk from the parking lot, you’ll find yourself at the first of three waterfalls. The trail is fairly easy to follow and takes you through some beautiful forested areas before reaching the falls.
The trail to the second and third waterfall is a bit steeper, but it’s worth it for the amazing views.
Mill Creek is beautiful at any time of year, but be careful in the winter as the trail can be slippery.
If you’re in Kelowna and looking for a fun and scenic hike, be sure to check out Fintry Falls.
This waterfall is located just outside of the city, about a 30-minute drive, and it offers beautiful views of cascading waterfalls as well as a hidden swimming area.
The 400 stairs are steep but well-maintained, and it’s easy to get lost in the beautiful canyon surroundings.
If you venture further down the unmarked path, you’ll come to a hidden swimming hole. However, be careful – this section of the trail is not easy to get to and can be tricky in some areas. So take your time and make sure you wear proper shoes!
Bear Creek Falls is one of Kelowna’s best-kept secrets; this hidden gem is only a 10-minute drive from downtown but feels a world away. The falls are wedged within canyon walls and offer stunning views of the cityscape.
The unmarked trail is moderately easy, with little elevation gain, but can be slippery in places. Be warned though, getting there is no picnic – you’ll need to swim to get there.
Depending on the water level, you may have to start swimming at different points. Don’t let that deter you; that’s all part of the fun!
Once you reach the waterfall, you can sit back and relax in the pool beneath the cascading water.
Note: The best times to visit are during the summer and early fall when the water levels are lower. High water levels can make the currents too strong for even the most experienced swimmer so make sure to time your visit carefully!
Looking for an easy hike that will still wow your Instagram followers? Just 30 minutes from downtown Kelowna, Hardy Falls is a flat 1.5 km trail that features several wooden bridges, making it ideal for novice hikers or those with young children.
The best part of the hike is when you get to the viewing platform, where you can see the falls cascading down into the small pool.
The falls are beautiful year-round, but they are especially stunning in the spring when the snowmelt creates a strong flow of water.
Hikers of all ages can enjoy Naramata Creek Falls; the easy, out-and-back trail is only 1.8 kilometers long and takes just over an hour to complete.
The deep river canyon, covered in moss and ferns, feels like something out of a fairytale.
And since the trail is short and relatively level, it’s perfect for families with young children or those who want to take their time and enjoy the surroundings.
It’s also a great trail for a leisurely hike with your four-legged friend – just be sure to keep them on a leash as the path is lined with poison ivy.
