11 Best Hotels to Stay in Banff

When it comes to accommodations in Banff, there are so many options it can be overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking for.

To narrow your search, you should figure out if there are any special amenities or requests that you “must-have”.

Does the hotel have a pet-friendly policy? Are you traveling with kids?

Or maybe you’re just looking for the perfect quiet escape with your favorite person.

Another thing to consider is how much you’re willing to spend on accommodations.

Hotels rates in Banff can vary wildly but for a budget-friendly hotel, your best bang for your buck would be to book a hotel that is away from the main strip of downtown Banff (but still be close by).

In this guide, we’ve rounded up a list of the best hotels to stay in Banff and highlighted the benefits of each property.

Hopefully, this helps you choose the perfect one for your needs!

1. Elk + Avenue

Downtown Banff

Source: TripAdvisor

Elk + Avenue is a trendy 3-level hotel with modern and minimalistic decor and is the perfect place to stay if you want to be just steps away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Banff.

Located right on Banff Avenue in the heart of the city, this hotel is within walking distance to the main dining and shopping area.

Major tourist attractions are about a 10-minute drive and the bus stop is conveniently located right outside of the hotel.

Previously known as the Banff International Hotel, this hotel was renovated and rebranded as the Elk + Avenue in 2016.

The air-conditioned rooms feature bright modern decor with beautiful mountain views.

Waking up to a freshly brewed cup of Joe couldn’t be any easier — the coffee shop Good Earth is just steps away from the hotel.

There’s also an on-site restaurant at Elk + Avenue — fill your bellies up at Farm & Fire after a long day of excursions!

Free underground parking is available and is first-come-first-serve with a height restriction of 6’1.

Free street parking is also available 2 blocks away from the hotel.

Hotel Tips

  • Ask for one of the inner rooms if you’re a light sleeper, the rooms facing the street can get a bit noisy in the morning due to traffic.
  • For all you night owls, there are no blackout curtains in the room so make sure you bring an eye mask if you plan to sleep in!

2. Canalta Lodge

Downtown Banff

Source: TripAdvisor

Canalta Lodge is a beautiful rustic property furnished with chalet charm, located just a quick 5-minute drive from the city center.

This alpine lodge sits at the north end of Banff’s main street and depending on how you look at it, this could either be a good thing or a bad thing for you.

Because the lodge is located further from the city hub and in the quieter side of town, you’ll be away from the noise but this also means that places to eat nearby are limited since most of the restaurants are in downtown Banff.

Walking to downtown will take you about 20 minutes and is a straight road down Banff Avenue.

A complimentary breakfast buffet is included at Canalta Lodge but there are no on-site restaurants — only a small snack bar that serves snacks, tea, and coffee.

Keep in mind that underground parking is not included in the room rate and is available for an extra fee of $9 CAD per day.

The only free parking in the area is behind the property.

There’s no back entrance so you’ll have to walk around the building — this can get a bit challenging in the snow!

Hotel Tips

  • The lighting in the rooms isn’t the best. If you want to keep the window blinds open without sacrificing privacy, try to request a room away from the spa that faces the back of the hotel.
  • Bike rentals are available on-site — a quick and fun way to get around town if you don’t feel like driving!

Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Banff, the Mount Royal Hotel is literally just steps from all the shops, bars, and eateries in town.

Due to a devastating fire in December 2016, the hotel went through a massive renovation and was completely rebuilt with a stylish character and contemporary design.

The Mount Royal Hotel is an excellent hotel choice for a ski holiday — free shuttles are perfectly located at the back of the hotel to the mountain slopes at Norquay, Lake Louise, and Sunshine.

Grab a hearty breakfast at Tony Roma’s, collect your gear from the free ski storage room and walk around the back to board the shuttle.

Hitting the slopes couldn’t get any easier!

And after an amazing day out on the slopes, swing by the rooftop hot tub to relax your sore muscles.

The hot tubs are definitely a highlight at the Mount Royal Hotel — the location offers sweeping views of the Canadian Rockies and is an excellent way to relax and end your night!

Hotel Tips

  • Rooms that face Banff Avenue have great views of the mountains but can get a little noisy, especially during weekends. For a quieter experience, ask for a room that faces the back of the hotel.
  • Street parking is pretty limited and can be challenging to find a spot — try arriving before 4PM to get a spot!

Built in the 1800s, the Fairmont Banff Springs is a world-famous castle nestled in the snowcapped peaks of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and attracts many visitors from all over the world with its traditional charm.

Not to be confused with its sister property in the area (Fairmont Château Lake Louise), Fairmont Banff Springs is located just on the border of Banff, offering stunning panoramic views of the alpine town and surrounding mountains.

If skiing is part of your plan during your stay in Banff, the shuttle buses are conveniently located just outside the main entrance of the hotel.

This Fairmont property is known for its luxurious amenities and impeccable service — there’s no question you can spend your entire trip exploring and indulging in everything this lavish resort has to offer.

Have your pick at relaxing in the indoor or heated outdoor pool, and if you’re looking for a more rejuvenating experience, go get pampered at the award-winning European spa.

There are many restaurants and bars on-site as well, and it can’t get any fancier than going for a spot of tea at the Rundle Bar!

When you’re ready to venture outside of your luxury bubble, taking a walk into the main part of town is mostly downhill and will take you about 20 minutes or 5 minutes by car.

Hotel Tips

  • With luxury accommodations come luxury prices — there are many added fees at this property, including a daily resort fee of $33.35 CAD per night and tourism levies.
  • Rooms on the lower level of this hotel can get noisy from the nearby shops. For that true grandiose retreat, consider upgrading to a room with mountain views or splurge on the Fairmont Gold Experience!

5. Buffalo Mountain Lodge

Tunnel Mountain

Buffalo Mountain Lodge banff
Source: TripAdvisor

Although Buffalo Mountain Lodge isn’t technically located in the city center of Banff, it’s still a popular option amongst tourists if you are looking for a cozy and peaceful stay.

This charming rustic lodge is situated in the more quiet part of Banff, roughly a 15-minute walk down the hill to the main area of town or a 5-minute drive.

The lodge also provides complimentary shuttle service to and from Banff Avenue or alternatively, you can take the Roam bus (No. 2) that’s conveniently located across the street from the hotel.

The Sleeping Buffalo Restaurant is located on the property so you won’t have to go far to grab a bite!

Buffalo Mountain Lodge is a bit on the dated side, but one can argue that it lends to its rustic charm.

If you’re looking for a hotel with a modern atmosphere and air conditioning, this is not the hotel for you.

Every room features a cozy wood-burning fireplace with alpine decor that opens up to a bright balcony.

Hotel Tips

  • Book one of the Premier Rooms, you’ll be in for a real treat. These rooms are large with beautiful vaulted ceilings and the best part is, these units have spacious bathrooms equipped with claw-foot soak tubs — perfect for bubbly romance!
  • Try to request a room above the ground floor as these lower suites can get quite noisy and the walls are not very soundproof. The hotel does provide earplugs if that isn’t an option.

Mount Norquay

Source: TripAdvisor

The Juniper is a hotel nestled in the woodlands, sitting at the base of Mount Norquay Ski Resort with priceless mountain and valley views.

Located just off the Trans-Canada Highway on the outskirts of Banff, this boutique hotel offers great value for a peaceful stay.

It’s a top choice if you have a car since it’s a bit of a walk into downtown and the complimentary shuttles at this hotel don’t run as frequently.

The overall design of this property has a modern twist on a traditional rustic design and is the perfect hideaway for a ski vacation in Banff.

Hotel Tips

  • Rooms facing the highway have the best views of the mountains but can get a bit noisy from traffic. If you have sensitive ears, try requesting a room that faces the back of the property (parking lot).
